It has become increasingly clear that drug companies and manufacturers of medical implants are able to produce and release dangerous products and still reap a hefty profit. Due to the nature of the drug regulatory system as established and operated by the Food and Drug Administration, medical devices such as hip replacement implants are not subject to rigorous clinical trials as are pharmaceuticals. Take the DePuy ASR hip replacement system, for example. Because it resembles previously proven technologies, this device did not have to undergo any clinical trials. The device has been found to have a failure rate of up to 13% and the company is now facing myriad DePuy hip recall lawsuits. DePuy and its parent company Johnson & Johnson are sure to incur large expenses in settling these lawsuits, but their bottom line ultimately will remain healthy. What is to stop large corporations from continuing to produce these injurious products? My poor grandmother. I am so outraged I can barely stand to write this. While talking with her on the phone last night, she told me that her hip implant is defective and needs to be replaced.
